Swords against Cthulhu: A New Dark Age

Deadline Extended: October 15th

Payment: Exposure and Royalties
60% of profits received
50% off RP paperback contributor copies (cost)

Flash fiction, Poetry, Short Stories (2,000 6,000 words)

Re-prints will also be considered.

Sword and sorcery in the aeon of Cthulhu Rising!

The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.

So saith Lovecraft.

Picture a future Earth, a savage world where science has been jettisoned in favour of primitive superstition, where technology has become the idol of a new religion. A world where the truth of Cthulhu has been revealed, where a lunatic humanity has learnt its true insignificance—the punchline in a cosmic joke. A new dark age has descended upon a world that has learnt too much. Science and superstition and the sorcery of the Mad Arab create a world where only the strong survive, and barbarian warriors battle for survival in a bleak and pitiless universe…

Science fantasy tales of dying earths, of low tech dystopias, of medieval post-apocalyptic worlds—all with a Cthulhu Mythos slant—will be welcome in this anthology.

In the crazy depths of the internet? In the minds of conspiracy theorists and muddle minded political fanatics? As insubstantial as a dream–or a nightmare. In a world increasingly fragmented, where right and left, atheism and religion, sanity and lunacy struggle for supremacy, who is the true manifestation of KEK?

Time Port 1985

Deadline extended: October 15th, 2017

Payment: Exposure and Royalties
60% of profits received
50% off RP paperback contributor copies (cost)

Word Count: Up to 5000 preferred

The year is 1985.

A covert private company, with government assistance, has constructed the first operational time travel vessel. After several successful unmanned test runs, it is now deemed safe for humans to operate.

Beyond this prompt, you can take the theme anywhere you like. The present day is 1985, and you should keep that in mind, using the technology available at the time plus any reasonable sci-fi elements (like our time machine).

But you decide if the travelers are going back or forward in time from there, whether the operators are legitimate or those who have stolen it, their mission or plans, as long as it maintains the basic present of 1985. We are looking for some retro fun here with that.

Likewise, you decide if altering the past or present has a positive, negative, or somewhat unimportant, effect on the timeline moving forward from the start of the journey. While this may or may not be of primary importance to your story, I do want it to be acknowledged at some level.

I am always looking for great horror. While this is science fiction and we want to have the Eighties retro element to all the stories, I would LOVE IT if my fellow twisted minds put a dark spin on the proceedings.

I will accept poetry as well.

If your story is over 6000 words, please email me a short synopsis first and explain why it needs to be longer. I will accept a few longer ones.

No minimum. I love flash and very short fiction, as long as it tells a story and isn’t just a vignette or character sketch.

Trumptopia

Deadline for Submissions: October 20th, 2017

Payment: Exposure and Royalties 60% of profits received 50% off RP paperback contributor copies (cost)

Word Count: Up to 7,500 preferred

If your story is over 7,500 words, please email me a short synopsis first and explain why it needs to be longer. I will accept a few longer ones.

Trumptopian Horror – Oxymoron? We think not. Think of it as the ultimate challenge in penning horror fiction (or is it? fiction that is.) America’s great again, while the rest of the world’s in chaos (nonvetted refugees), or an America that treats illegal immigrants as Iraq, North Korea, or China would. A revamped space race under Elon Musk with government backing (what might we find out there). America becomes a financial Logan’s Run? I don’t know, use your imaginations folks. This will be fun. Make horror fiction great again. We’ll build Trumptopia and the Harlequin romance novels will pay for it.Trust me…. this thing’s going to be Yuuuuuuge.

The plans are to critique these works of art. To coin someone else’s words “sometimes having an editor take a story apart for you teaches you more than any book. IMO.” Well, I suppose that’s my opinion, too. If you’d rather not have the story critiqued, please let me know – but it is less painful than going to the dentist. Go for it!! What have you to lose?

  8. Interested in Barbarian Crowns II. What sort of timeframe are we looking at? My story is about half completed, just looking at a rough deadline.
    Thanks in advance,

  9. Any word on the status of Ad Nauseam: A Return to Splatterpunk? I tried e-mailing T.M. McLean, but haven’t received a reply. I’ve submitted a story, but I don’t know if it has been accepted/rejected or even received.

      • It’s been over a month and I still haven’t heard anything. I really would like to know what’s happening with this. If this anthology isn’t going forward I would like to submit my story elsewhere, but I’d like to give this one a chance before I do that.

      • Hey,

Apologies for the late reply, but we have been unable to contact this editor. If this project doesn’t move forward by November end then I will be putting out the call for those already accepted to re-forward their contracts and pieces directly to me, so that the book can be completed for an Xmas release. It wouldn’t be an ideal scenario, but I would like to see this book completed for all concerned.

  10. My story Forcing the Bar at Maracaibo was accepted for Bottle of Rum back in January of this year. However, I see it listed above as having been accepted for another anthology entitled Moment by Moment. I’ve twice made enquiry of the editor in this regard but have received no reply. What gives?

  11. Are you still looking for submissions for Barbarian Crowns II? It’s still listed here but I don’t see it mentioned on the Current Acceptances page. Thanks!

  12. Stupid question: If Barbarian Crowns is still open, the world that the stories take place in should be referred to as the Southlands? Or was that an example? Lol

  13. I was wondering how full the Thirteen O’clock Press “Alone” is. I have a poem that might fit, but I still have some edits to make. If it’s going to be closed soon I might not have time to finish.

    Thanks!

  18. Will there be more detailed submission guidelines posted for “Blue Gonk III”? I know the editor’s name (James Pyne), preferred genre (dark/horror), and the word count (500). What I don’t know: story formatting details, submission deadline, and how to word the e-mail ‘Subject’ line Thanks!
